Things They Never Taught (But Ought To) Future Lawyers In Ethics Lecture (Part 1)

  • Do not belittle your opponent in court or anywhere else even if they really do not know what they’re doing and even if you believe with all your heart that you are the smartest person on planet earth.

  • Do not think that you are the smartest person on planet earth.

  • Do not try to aggravate the situation by feeding to the fury of the judge against your opponent just to make you look good or to get what you want from court. It may just backfire in ways you might or might not foresee.

  • Do not play dirty and hit below the belt even if what you’re doing is quite legal and/or in line of the procedure (although it usually borders dangerously between proper and improper procedure).

  • Do not take your client’s battle personally and wage your own war against them and/or their solicitors.

  • Please respect your client or at least treat them nicer and not just the big shot ones. No matter how trivial their matter is or how much of a regular Joe they are, they are still your client.

  • There are possibilities that you might be wrong. Accept it.

  • People are not born with legal knowledge and neither were you.

  • Treating your clients and opponents better and/or nicer does not make you any less of a lawyer.

  • Do not think that everybody thinks highly of you or like you a lot. You might be surprise how people talk especially if you do any of the above a lot.

  • Humility is a virtue not a weakness.

  • Just because you've got the gift of the gab does not mean you're a good lawyer.
